HOCKEY FALLS TO UMASS BOSTON, 5-0
NEW BEDFORD, MA-Visiting UMass Boston scored three power play goals and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 5-0, in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday evening.
The Beacons scored twice in the second period to take a 3-0 lead after two. Sophomore foreard Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA/Philadelphia Little Flyers) stuffed home the rebound of a shot by ssophomore forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI/Walpole Express) at the 6:44 mark, and senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA/Nichols) fired home a pass from junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA/Boston Bulldogs) from point-blank range at 18:31 with UMass Boston on a power play.
UMB took a 1-0 lead at 11:35 of the first period. Freshman forward Bill Baker (Vancouver, BC/Exeter Seawolves) scored from the lower edge of the face-off circle, firing a shot high into the net after taking a pass from Tejchma. The Beacons scored a pair of power play goals in the third period, with junior defenseman Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, PA/Oswego Admirals) scoring on a shot off a face-off at 10:47, and Kranzky scoring on a rebound at 19:33.
“They had three consecutive power play goals, and that was really the difference between us tonight,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “The biggest disappointment for us was that when we had a five on three advantage, we didn’t generate a barrage of shots, which is what you are looking for in that situation. We’ll move on, and focus on our upcoming conference games.”
UMass Boston out shot UMass Dartmouth, 39-28. Freshman goaltender Jonathan Morrow (Romeo, MI/Jersey Hitmen-EJHL) made 34 saves for the Corsairs, while senior Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY/Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack-AJHL) made 28 for the Beacons.
UMD dropped to 5-7-1 with the defeat, while UMass Boston improved to 6-6-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Thursday evening. The Beacons will visit Southern Maine Friday.
