HOCKEY TEAM WINS AT CURRY, 3-1

MILTON, MA– The fourth time was the charm for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team.

The Corsairs defeated host Curry for the fourth straight time, winning, 3-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Max Ulin Memorial Rink Saturday

Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) of UMass Dartmouth and Zach Cardella of the Colonels were impervious in the first period, which ended scoreless with the Corsairs holding a 16-11 shooting advantage. UMass Dartmouth sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) broke a scoreless tie in the second period, scoring unassisted at 5:03 with a two-man advantage. Sophomore forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) made it 2-0 when he beat Cardella on a backhand shot from the slot at the 14:07.

Jason Yuel scored a power play goal for Curry at 11:07 of the third period to make it 2-1, but senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) scored into an empty net with 25 seconds remaining to seal the verdict.

“This was our best effort of the season, in all facets of the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We scored a five on three power play goal, which is an absolute must in that situation, and we played a very good, tight-checking third period, holding them to eight shots on goal.”

The Corsairs, who converted two of 13 power play opportunities while killing three of four CC power plays, out shot the Colonels, 44-22. Curry was whistled for 18 penalties totaling 68 minutes, including three penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct, three misconduct penalties, a bench penalty and a game misconduct. Green made 21 saves, while Cardella made 41 stops.

The Corsairs improved to 5-1-0 and 4-0-0 with the victory, while the Colonels dropped to 6-2-1 and 5-1-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island in an exhibition game Tuesday evening.
