PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 14th-ranked Providence College Friars scored three
consecutive third period goals to defeat the eighth-ranked New Hampshire
Wildcats, 3-1, in college hockey action on Friday, November 10, 2000 at
PC's Schneider Arena.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a Darren Haydar goal at the 18:35
mark of the first period, assisted by Matt Swain and Lanny Gare. Haydar
gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after he finished off a two-on-one break in
with a one-timer that he snapped past Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer.
Schaefer kept the game close for the Friars in the second period
when he kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard by making 14 stops. UNH
goaltender Ty Conklin had recorded 13 saves through two periods to keep the
Friars scoreless.
The momentum changed in the third period when Devin Rask got the
Friar offense going with his seventh goal of the season at 7:11. Rask
tipped a Matt Libby blast from the point through a screen for the Friars'
first goal. PC took its first lead of the game with nine minutes remaining
when J.J. Picinic collected a rebound and wristed a high shot over a
sprawled Conklin. PC continued to pressure and increased its lead to 3-1
on a goal by Peter Fregoe at 16:45. Fregoe one timed a Jon DiSalvatore
pass on a breakaway for the insurance goal.
The Wildcats pressured over the final two minutes as they pulled
Conklin on a power-play and peppered Schaefer with shots. However, the
sophomore netminder kept UNH off the scoreboard as the Friars earned their
fifth win of the season at Schneider Arena.
Schaefer earned the game's first star and finished with 36
saves. Conklin recorded 19 stops for New Hampshire.
With the win, the Friars improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in
HOCKEY EAST action, while New Hampshire dropped to 5-3-1 and 1-2-0 in
league play.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, November
11 at New Hampshire's Whittemore Center at 7:00 p.m.
