The opening round of the 1994 Women's Beanpot was a long and slow
affair.  It seemed like a night of endless re-icings.  The format
produced teams either "saving it" or being "tired".  The result was
not a good showcase for the women's game.  Next year I hope they add
MIT and go with the normal 4 team format.
 
Game 1 was the slowest of the lot.  BC and Harvard looked like they
did not want to expend any energy, so they would have enough zip to
give the Huskies a game.  Joey Alissi (Francie Walton) scored the
opening goal when she knocked the puck in after a series of rebounds.
Alissi (Stacy Kellogg, AJ Mleczko) finished the scoring in the 1st
half and for the game when she tapped in another rebound after a good
shot from the point by Winkie Mleczko.  Overall, a sleepwalker of a
game.
 
Game 2 was the best match.  In the first half both teams were really
skating.  Northeastern got started when Kim Haman (Shelley Looney)
scored a shorthanded goal.  The play was made by the explosive break
in play by Looney, who rocketed down the right wing, cut in and put
her shot off the far post.  Haman put away the easy rebound.  Harvard
tied the game on a power play goal when Alissi (Holly Leitzes,
Kellogg) deflected in a shot from the point.  In the second half of
the game, Haman gave the Huskies the victory when her wrap around
found net.  Overall, the Crimson played NU tough.  The Huskies were
not playing well as a team.
 
Game 3 was very dull.  BC having sat around for an hour and a half
just never got their skating legs back.  NU scored a lot, but
also played in a very unsportsmanlike way.  In the first half Haman
(Looney, Missi Werner) finished off a 1-2-3 passing play on a break
in.  Rayanne Conway (Courtney King, Jeanine Sobek) made it 2-0 when
she made a lovely solo rush up the right wing, and then flipped the
puck in off the BC goalie.  In the second half, Angela Scerra
(Looney, Haman) put her chance away after the puck was dug out of the
corner.  Sobek (Conway, Katherine Wyman) made it 4-0 when she tucked
in the puck after a nice 1-2 break in.  Sobek (Conway) continued the
scoring when a good pass found her on the weak/back side.  Looney
made it 6-0 when off a face-off she burst in and deked out the goalie.
Looney (Scerra) deked by the goalie again off the ensuing face-off
after motoring the puck into the zone.  Sobek (Conway, King) completed
her hat trick, and made the score 8-0, when she drilled home a wide-
angle slap shot.  BC finally got on the board when Tracey Labossiere
(Sue Compson, Karen Emma)  was able to poke a rebound past the NU
goalie.  Overall, a game where BC drifted and the Huskies while
scoring tons of goals, were looking very chippy.
 
Boston College did not play as well as I have seen them play earlier
this season.  I think playing the first and last game was suppose to
be good as it gave them a rest.  It looked like it just knock the
stuffing out of them.  I again liked the play of Karen Emma.  On the
night she was not full of her usual zip.  Still she is a good skater
and has a nice instinct for the game.  Laura Traynham and Lisa
Tulimieri had fairly good games up front for the Eagles.  Tobin
Dominick made her share of break up plays on D.  In goal for the
first match was Kristen Gray who continues to impress as a solid
puck stopper.
 
At times I thought some of the Harvard players were going to take
root in the ice during the first match.  Just a bunch of sleep-
walkers really.  Christa Calagione showed the most energy in the
first game and continued trying to generate offense in the second.
In that second match, Holly Leitzes played extremely well.  Her
strong fluid skating and reading of the game is what makes the
Crimson go.  Erin Villiotte played a very good match in net.  She did
not face as many shots as she did against Princeton, but seems to be
there when the team needs her.  Colleen Malek played very well on D.
She and Leitzes hold down the Harvard defense.  Joey Alissi logged
many a skating stride to help keep NU in check.  If she got more help
from her linemates, they could all go farther.  AJ Mleczko was in and
out of both matches.  At times she would turn it on for a few seconds
and look dangerous.  Overall AJ looked tired.
 
Northeastern can not be very happy with their play.  Despite doing
fairly well at the Concordia Tourney last weekend, they still appear
off the boil.  Shelley Looney showed some brilliant speed last night.
She also drifted, and just didn't look to have the drive she had
early in the season.  Rayanne Conway played extremely well.  She had
some good skating and passing and was probably the best team player
last night.  Jeanine Sobek woke up last night and showed what a major
force she can be on the ice.  Sobek has so much talent, if she could
just get some more energy on the ice she would be something.
Michelle DiStefano played in goal for the Huskies and had to play
well at times to keep her team in the net.  Julie Otto had a rare
appearance on D last night in the second game and looked real slick.
 
Next week's final between Harvard and Northeastern could be a great
match.  As noted in another post, it is the final two weeks for the
ECAC Women, so I expect both teams to be in better form.
