And here's a look at the top 10 teams over the last two seasons. It's
no consolation that Michigan has the most wins over that period, or that
they're the only team with back to back 30+ win seasons. It's interested
to note the east-west differentials here. Although 4 of the top 5 schools
are from the west, 5 of the top 9 are from the east. In simple terms of
winning percentage, the top 10 includes 3 teams from Hockey East and the
WCHA and 2 teams from the CCHA and ECAC. It's generally argued that the
best eastern teams are as solid as the best western teams, but overall the
two western conferences are stronger. Without attempting to be pompous,
smug, coy, etc...I have one question (which I recently became aware of).
If the top eastern teams are as good as the top western teams, why has the
west won:
the last 3 NC$$ championships,
6 of the last 7,
12 of the last 14,
17 of the last 20?
I have no intention of offending any easterners, but I never realized the
recent pattern of domination. If we assume that the probability of a
western team winning the title is .5, and that each season is an independent
event (like coin flipping), the probability of the west winning 17 of 20
titles is roughly .001087 (or 1 out of 920). Interesting.

A final note to Dave Smith:
We made the trip in fine fashion without any tickets. The trick is to
go 60-65 while in New York and 85-95 while in Canada. At least that worked
for us.
