I have not seen a break down on the sources of Div. 1 players in a couple
of years. The break down is of interest two ways. Break down by place of
birth tells you something about the state of youth hockey. Break down by
previous team tells you something about the state of high school, prep
school and junior (US & Canada) hockey. I should not leave out Catholic
high schools and midget teams since both do send players to Div. 1 if I
recall my perusal of rosters correctly. Has anyone done any break down of
Div. 1 rosters of late?
This US National Team roster is interesting
Tom Askey Kenmore, N.Y.
John Blue Huntington Beach, Calif.
Bob Beers Pittsburgh, Pa.
Bryan Berard Woonsocket, R.I.
Bret Hedican (A) St. Paul, Minn.
Ken Klee Indianapolis, Ind.
Scott Lachance Charlottesville, Va.
Matt Martin Hamden, Conn.
Jon Rohloff Mankato, Minn.
Donald Brashear Bedford, Ind.
Ted Donato (C) Boston, Mass.
Chris Drury Trumbull, Conn.
Darby Hendrickson Richfield, Minn.
Todd Krygier Chicago Heights, Ill.
Chris Marinucci Grand Rapids, Minn.
Marty McInnis Hingham, Mass.
Dan Plante Hayward, Wis.
Paul Ranheim St. Louis, Mo.
Michael Sullivan (A) Marshfield, Mass.
Chris Tancill Livonia, Mich.
It is interesting for the spread it shows but it certainly is not
representative of what I would expect in Div. 1. For example I would not
expect the ratio of Michigan to California born players to be 1 to 1.
Minn 4
Mass 3
Conn 2
Ind 2
NY 1
Calif 1
Pa 1
R.I. 1
Va 1
Ill 1
Wis 1
Mo 1
Mich 1
The last time I saw a break down I recall Ontario was the largest source in
Canada by a substantial margin. It is also interesting to correlate place
of birth and last team. For example, I would expect that you would find
only a small percentage of players going direct from high school to Div. 1
and the vast majority of those players would be from Minnesota.
Just idle off season speculation waiting for next year.
