In response to Todd Myrick's post inquiring about schools that are D-I
in hockey only, I thought I'd break down the East to the best of my
knowledge.
ECAC:
RPI, Clarkson, SLU, Union: D-I Hockey only, D-III everything else
(unless Union has made progress in upgrading football?)
Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Princeton, Yale, Vermont, Dartmouth, Colgate:
D-I in everything (I'm pretty sure).
Hockey East:
Maine, BU, BC, UNH, UMass, Northeastern: D-I everything (I-AA in
football is still D-I, as is NAC basketball)
Providence: I know they're D-I in Hockey and B-ball, but I admit to
having no clue about other sports.
UM-Lowell, Merrimack: D-I in hockey only.
The WCHA thing has me thinking (dangerous): How about getting the
ECAC three more league games per team by going to divisions (three
against divisional foes, two against all others)? Geographical rivals
could play their third game at a neutral site, i.e. Harvard/Brown at
the Fleet Center, RPI/Union in the Knick (this one is already planned
as a non-league game anyway). A few more bucks for the coffers, and
slightly better looking records at the end of the season (Western
teams always seem to have played an average of six to eight more games
than eastern ones). Maybe even a new playoff format (division
championships with the winners facing off in a double elimination
round, or something). Crazy, I know.
My divisions:
The LeClair Division, or The Great White North (By far the toughest
this year):
UVM, Clarkson, SLU, Dartmouth
The Oates Division (OK, OK, maybe the Dryden Division; or an
RPI-Cornell comprimise, the Harkness Division):
Cornell, RPI, Colgate, Union
The Donato Division/Hobey Baker Division:
Harvard, Yale, Brown, Princeton
Granted, there wouldn't have been much balance this year, but over
time I think these would be fair. I know it's a moot point since it
would never happen, but why do ECAC teams play fewer games than
everyone else?
