From the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle:
Amerks aim to boost rookie's confidence
By KEVIN OKLOBZIJA staff writer
(Feb. 6, 1996) -- The Buffalo Sabres say rookie center Brian Holzinger
has lost confidence, and they're hoping he can find it
with the Rochester Americans.
Holzinger, 23, was assigned to the Amerks on Monday and will play his
first American Hockey League game Friday against
the Binghamton Rangers at the War Memorial.
Named the 1995 Hobey Baker Award winner as college hockey's top player
after his senior season at Bowling Green,
Holzinger hasn't scored a goal since Nov. 29. He has five goals, nine
assists, 14 points and 16 penalty minutes in 44 NHL
games with the Sabres this season.
"I think he has totally lost his confidence," Sabres assistant coach
Terry Martin said. "He's an offensive type of guy and he
needs to be putting the puck in the net."
The Sabres, who have lost nine of 11 games, recalled left winger Scott
Pearson for the second time in four days. Pearson had
an assist in the Amerks' 6-2 win against the Carolina Monarchs on Sunday.
Holzinger, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Parma, Ohio, broke into the
NHL late last season, assisting on three goals in four regular-season
games. He had two goals and one assist in four Stanley Cup playoff
games as the Sabres lost in the first round
to the Philadelphia Flyers. But he has struggled greatly over the past month.
"This move is for Brian Holzinger's sake," Martin said. "He's going to
play more in key situations and he'll get the ice time he
needs."
Holzinger's arrival will bolster a lineup that produced back-to-back
6-2 wins at Carolina. The Amerks take a season-best
three-game winning streak into Friday's game. They play at Adirondack
on Saturday and at home Sunday against Albany.
