COMMENTS:
BC rebounds from last week's poor effort against BU to play one of
their better games of the year, using aggressive forechecking and
wide-open center ice to take the play to Providence College. This
is BC's 4th straight win over PC. Missing for PC were Dennis Sousa
(out for season with sprained left knee) and Russ Guzior (suspended
for off-ice disciplinary reasons.) Missing for BC were F Jamie
O'Leary (flu/mono?), F Jerry Buckley (last game DQ), and D Joe Harney
(reason unknown.) Benefitting were frosh F Tim Lewis, who scored his
first official college point, and soph F Ryan Taylor, who also scored
his first college point. Ryan Taylor played wing, though he is normally
a defenseman. The win moves BC ahead of PC in the Hockey East standings,
30 pts. to 27 (though Providence has one less game than the Eagles.)

FIRST PERIOD
BC carries most of the play in the period, but Providence stays in the
game with 2 power play goals. Brian Callahan gets the first BC score by
picking up a free puck in the middle of the PC zone and blasts a sharp
high shot past Dennis. Ryan Taylor gets his first assist for his hard
forecheck on a PC player that squirts the puck free to Callahan. Brady
Kramer gets it back with a nice power play effort; Kramer had a monster
game for PC, with very fast and strong skating. D Ken Hemenway puts BC
back into the lead with a high screen shot from the top of the zone.
Kramer gets his 2nd PPG to equalize when he cruises to the net just in
time to tip Chad Quenneville's feed from the left boards past Greg Taylor.
BC's D Peter Masters had Kramer "covered" but was unable to keep Kramer
from getting his stick to the puck. Again, both goals scored on Taylor
resulted from weak defensive plays and inability to clear in front.

SECOND PERIOD
BC gets another quick start in this period; in the first minute Don Chase
misses a wide open net after a wild scramble deep in the PC zone. Shortly
after, Ashe sends the puck in from the point, and Krayer gets a close-in
goal. (I have no details on the shot, as the BC Eagle "mascot" was
entertaining some youngsters in front of me and blocked my view.) PC
gets it right back, though, when Dennis Burke blasts a long shot from
the left point past a totally screened Taylor. Aggressive BC forechecking
keeps most of the action in center ice or the PC zone for most of the
rest of the period. The "checking" line of McCarthy, McHale, and Harris
gets a power play goal with nice work in front of the goal, keeping the
puck active until McCarthy can poke it home. The Eagles finally open
a two goal lead on a late power play when Don Chase breaks in on the
left and stuffs it home after faking a pass across the front of the net.

THIRD PERIOD
PC finally gets untracked and carries the momentum for the first 10-minute
half period. The dominant group of Kramer, Quenneville, and Breen gets
PC within one early with hard work and great forechecking. BC desperately
hangs on until the switch at the 10-minute mark; PC outshoots BC 11-1 to
this point. Taylor is forced to make several good saves to protect the
lead in the last 10 minutes, though the BC forwards start to regain their
aggressiveness at forechecking to keep the puck in the PC end for long
stretches. BC takes a timeout when matching penalties are called at 17:49,
mostly to rest. PC takes their timeout at 18:41 and pulls the goaltender.
The subsequent man-advantage puts a lot of pressure on BC, and Taylor is
forced to make 2 strong saves. A stupid late hit by Greg Callahan gives
PC 29 seconds of 5-on-3 and 11 seconds of 6-on-4; they desperately try to
get the tying goal. The only benefit of the penalty is that BC is able to
ice the puck to relieve the pressure, and very strong skating/checking
keeps Providence from getting any more good shots until the final horn.

This game was a welcome change from the interference-fests of last week's
BC-BU games, as both teams were able to move the puck and go back and
forth through center ice with strong skating. BC had the better of the
forechecking and attacking opportunities on the whole, though Quenneville
and Kramer were very good for PC. Providence seemed content to drop the
defense back and let BC rush up the ice, and BC was eager to take
advantage of the offensive space. When BC forechecked aggressively, the
play stayed mostly in the PC zone, and Greg Taylor didn't have to stand
on his head in the goal (for a change.) I think the 3rd period showed
some fatigue on BC's part, and PC cranked it up to carry the play, though
they couldn't get the tying goal. These two teams seem very similar in
a lot of ways, with 2 decent scoring lines, some defensive weaknesses,
and the inability to clear the defensive zone under heavy forechecking.
BC's defense breaks down more frequently than PC, but Taylor is probably
a more solid goaltender (despite the high GAA; many of the goals are
defensive breakdown problems, not goaltender weakness.)

I have to confess I enjoyed this one, especially after last week's poor
showing by Boston College. For some reason BC plays Providence well,
and they show confidence when playing PC. Or maybe it was just that
Jerry York read them the riot act after last week. In any case, there
may be some hope for BC. The rematch is at Providence's Schneider Arena
on Saturday night, and the winner will have a big jump on staying in
7th place with the possibility of moving up higher.
