Summary:
The Dutchmen were expected to beat North Adams. Union came in ranked
number 10 in the nation in Division III, and North Adams came in 1-11, 0-8 on
the road. But the Dutchmen have a history of playing down to the level of
lesser opponents, often just getting by a team, or sometimes losing a game they
should easily win. The Dutchmen did not let that happen this time as they
dominated the Mohawks, winning 10-1.
Although Union was very sloppy for a good part of the first period,
they came out of it with a 4-1 lead. The only goal for North Adams came on a
bad hop. Junior goalie Shayne White, in his first start since December 12, shut
out North Adams for the final 2 1/2 periods. The second period was dominated by
Union, although they only got one goal out of it. North Adams goaltender Dave
Flint turned away several Union scoring opportunities. But in the 3rd period,
Union came out looking to put North Adams away, and did just that by scoring on
their first 3 shots on goal, extending the lead to 8-1. Union didn't let up, and
scored twice more to set a season high with 10 goals. The Dutchmen ended the
3rd period with 20 shots on goal against the outmatched Mohawks.
Everyone joined in the scoring for Union. Terry Campbell picked up 3
assists to bring his career total to 100. The school record is 102 held by Tod
Fobare. Bill Sedergren scored 2 goals in a game for the first time this season,
and added an assist. Junior Craig Ferrero had a goal and 2 assists to extend
his consecutive game scoring streak to 22. Even goalie Shayne White got an
assist on Union's 9th goal when he played the puck out to Terry Campbell at his
own blue line, and Campbell passed it ahead to Dalton Menhall who skated in and
put a shot behind Flint. Dalton Menhall also scored Union's first goal and
assisted on 2 others. Junior Tim Cregan added the first 2 goal game of his
career.
Union's record improves to 9-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the ECAC, and
North Adams falls to 1-12. Union will travel to Salem State Saturday, in a game
featuring 2 of the teams in the NCAA Division III Top 10.
