HOCKEY OUTSCORES FITCHBURG STATE, 8-4
FITCHBURG, MA – Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs-AtJHL) score three goals and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored five unanswered goals late during a span of just over eight minutes spanning the end of the first period and the start of the second period and outscored host Fitchburg State, 8-4, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Wallace Civic Center Thursday evening.
 
The Corsairs took a 4-1 lead after the first period, scoring four times in the final 6:39. Junior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) tied the game at 1-1 when he scored at 13:21 of the first period. Junior forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) assisted. gave the Corsairs a 2-1 lead when he scored his first goal of the game on a power play at 15:52, with Marquis and junior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) assisting. 
Junior forward Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, MA/Bishop Guertin HS) made it 3-1 when he scored at 18:48 of the first period, with senior defenseman Justin Pye (Medford, MA/Bridgton Academy) and senior forward Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) drawing the assists. Marquis scored 16 seconds later, at 19:04, to make it 4-1, with senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) and Owens assisting. 
Joe Caveney had given Fitchburg State a 1-0 lead when he converted a pass from Derek Giasanti at 8:19 of the first period. 
Owens made it 5-1 when he scored at 1:23 of the second period, with Dudley and Marquis assisting, before Kris Threlkeld of the Falcons cut the lead to 5-2 when he scored at 4:32. Cory Callen scored a power play goal for Fitchburg at 11:56 of the second period to cut the Corsairs’ advantage to 5-3 before Dudley scored for the Corsairs at 14:11 to make it 6-3. Marquis drew the assist. 
Owens scored his third goal of the game at 3:30 of the third period to give UMass Dartmouth a 7-3 lead. Caveney scored his second of the game for Fitchburg State at 7:37 of the third period to cut UMD’s advantage to 7-4, but freshman defenseman Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL) completed the scoring with a power play goal at 9:38 of the third period, with Owens assisting. 
Owens and Marquis each finished with five points, while Dudley had four. 

UMass Dartmouth outshot Fitchburg State in the first period, 23-9, and for the game, 47-30. It was the second consecutive game that the Corsairs registered 49 shots. Junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/ Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 26 saves for UMass Dartmouth. Bobby Leiser started in goal for FSU and made 27 saves before he was replaced after the Corsairs’ sixth goal. Randy Wolcott finished up and made 12 stops. 

“We played with great energy tonight, and played very well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We scored two power play goals, our first line accounted for five of our eight goals, and we had good play throughout the lineup. It was a good, solid win.”
UMass Dartmouth outshot Fitchburg State in the first period, 22-9, and for the game, 49-30. It was the second consecutive game that the Corsairs registered 49 shots. Junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/ Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 26 saves for UMass Dartmouth. Bobby Leiser started in goal for FSU and made 27 saves before he was replaced after the Corsairs’ sixth goal. Randy Wolcott finished up and made 14 stops. 
UMass Dartmouth improved to 14-7-2 and 9-5-2 in the MASCAC with the victory while Fitchburg State fell to 8-12-3 and 7-7-2 in MASCAC play with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday evening.
