HOCKEY, WESTFIELD STATE PLAY 1-1 OVERTIME TIE
NEW BEDFORD, MA – Sophomore goaltender Eddie Davey (Orangeville, ON/Abitibi Eskimos-NOJHL) made 48 saves and Westfield State tied the game with a third period power play goal as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team and the visiting Owls played a 1-1 overtime tie in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

Junior defenseman Matt Correia (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) had given UMass Dartmouth the lead when he scored the only goal of the first period. He retrieved the rebound of his own slap shot, which had been blocked, and fired a wrist shot from the lower circle that deflected past Westfield State sophomore goaltender Eddie Davey (Orangeville, ON/Abilibi Eskimos-NOJHL) at 17:31.
The Owls tied the score in the third period. Freshman forward Steve Evans (Kingston, ON/Wellington Dukes-OJHL) tied the game when he re-directed a pass by junior forward Lucas Romero (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Pembroke Lumberkings-CJHL) past UMD junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) 19 seconds into a power play at 8:49.
“We’re going through a period that all hockey teams go through, we are having very little puck luck,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “Clearly, we dominated the game, and yet, we did not come out with a win. We struggled on the power play, and that’s Westfield State’s forte, and they got a power play goal to tie it up, and that was the difference in the game, so to speak. We had some glorious opportunities in overtime, but we couldn’t convert. We have three games left in the regular season, and we have to get ready for Fitchburg next Thursday.”
The Corsairs out shot the Owls, 49-22. Williams made 21 saves for UMD.
UMass Dartmouth is now 13-7-2 and 8-5-2 in the MASCAC, while Westfield State is 5-12-5 and 3-9-4 in MASCAC play. UMD will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Thursday evening. Westfield State will host Salem State next Thursday.
