HOCKEY WINS AT WESTFIELD STATE, 5-3
WESTFIELD, MA –The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team took a 4-1 lead after two periods and went on to defeat host Westfield State, 5-3 , in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Amelia Park Arena Thursday evening.

Junior forwards Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) and Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) scored in the first period to stake UMass Dartmouth to a 2-0 lead Senior forwards Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) and Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) scored in the second period to give the Corsairs a three-goal lead at the second intermission.
The owls scored a pair of power play goals in the third period, the second one coming with 3:18 left to cut the Corsairs’ advantage to 4-3. But senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs=AtJHL) scored into an empty net to seal the verdict.
“We played a very good second period, and average first and third periods,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We did a good job in the second period, outshooting them 15 to 8, but they came back with two power play goals to cut a reasonable safe lead into a one-goal lead before Mike Owens scored an empty net goal. It was good to move into a tie for first place.”
The Corsairs outshot the Owls, 36-32. UMD junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 29 saves, while Westfield State’s Ian Wilson stopped 31 shots.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-4-1 and 6-2-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, moving into a tie for first place in the league, while Westfield State dropped to 3-10-2 and 2-7-1 with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they host Fitchburg State Saturday.
