HOCKEY HOLDS OFF WESTFIELD STATE, 5-4
NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team grabbed an early lead and held off visiting Westfield State, 5-4, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

The Corsairs, who twice took three-goal leads only to see the Owls come back to within a goal, held off the Owls in the final 40 seconds after they had lifted junior goaltender Ian Wilson (Tulsa, OK/North Bay Skyhawks) for an extra attacker.
Junior forward Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) had given UMass Dartmouth a 5-4 lead when he shoveled home the rebound of junior defenseman Justin Pye’s (Medford, MA/Bridgton Academy) shot at 3:39 of the third period. Junior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) made it 5-2 two minutes and 12 seconds later.
The Owls came back, getting a goal from freshman defenseman Stephen Tellier (Chicopee, MA/Springfield Pics) when he batted a rebound past UMD senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) during a power play at 10:54. Junior forward A.J. Shiverdecker (Kettering, OH/North Bay Skyhawks) made it 5-4 with a power play deflection of a shot by junior forward Pat Nelson (Cary, NC/Queen City Steam) at 18:56.
The Corsairs jumped out on top, scoring the game’s first three goals before Westfield State got on the board.
Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) scored on UMD’s first shot, taking a drop pass from junior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) and firing home a slap shot from the circle at the 1:10 mark. Sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley College) made it 2-0 when he re-directed home a pass from senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr.Warriors) with UMD on the power play at 5:55. Hill took a drop pass from senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and scored at 10:13. Wilson replaced starting goalie Ray Monroe (Sr. Shrewsbury, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) at that point, and freshman forward Taylor Murphy (Toronto, ON/Markham Waxers) put WSU on the board when he scored a power play goal at 12:40 of the first period

Westfield made it 3-2 when sophomore forward Jason Nelson (Raleigh, NC/Springfield Jr. Falcons) poked in a loose puck at 16:44 of the second period.. All four of Westfield State’s goals came on the power play, and the fourth came when they had removed Wilson for an extra attacker.
"We certainly played better than a 5-4 score," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We got off to a good start, putting up three goals in the first period. We came back well after a lackluster effort Thursday night. The four power play goals that we gave up are certainly cause for concern, but, all in all, it was a good effort."
The Owls out shot UMass Dartmouth, 38-30. Tracy made 34 saves for UMD, while Monroe and Wilson combined to make 25 saves for WSU.
UMD improved to 9-3-1 and 5-2-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while WSU dropped to 2-12-1 and 1-7-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit UMass Boston Tuesday evening. The Owls will visit Fitchburg State next Saturday.
