PROVIDENCE HOCKEY DEFEATS UMASS AMHERST, 3-2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Jon DiSalvatore scored with 5:10 remaining in
the third period to break a 2-2 tie and give the Providence College Friars
a 3-2 HOCKEY EAST win over the UMass Amherst Minutemen on Friday, November
2 in Providence, R.I.
For the sixth consecutive game this season, the Friars allowed the first
goal of the contest as the Minutemen took a 1-0 lead at the 15:47 mark of
the first period when freshman Peter Trovato broke through the Friar
defense and slid a low shot under PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer. The Friars
tallied the game-tying goal with 19 seconds left in the first period on a
backhander by sophomore John Luszcz.
Senior Peter Fregoe gave PC its first lead of the game as he poked in a
rebound at the 3:04 mark of the second period. The Minutemen battled back
and gained momentum with a late goal by Tim Vitek with 59 seconds remaining
in the second period. UMass' Tim Turner stole Stephen Wood's clearing pass
and fired a shot on Schaefer which was stopped, but Vitek pounced on the
rebound and lifted a shot high over a sprawled Schaefer.
The third period went back and forth with each team having several scoring
opportunities before DiSalvatore netted the game-winning goal for PC.
The Friars outshot UMass, 36-31.
Schaefer made 29 stops in the win. UMass freshman Tim Warner recorded 33
saves.
