PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTES
(0-2-0 OVERALL/0-0-0 HOCKEY EAST)
LAST WEEK: The Friars traveled to Omaha, Neb. to play in the Maverick
Stampede. On Friday, October 12 PC was defeated by No. 3 Michigan, 6-3. On
Saturday, October 13, the Friars were defeated by No. 12 Nebraska-Omaha,
4-3, in overtime. Senior Peter Fregoe and Jon DiSalvatore each scored twice
in the two games and Devin Rask and Stephen Wood each scored as well. PC
junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer made 57 saves on the weekend.

SEASON-OPENING LOSSES: The last time the Friars opened the season with a
pair of losses was during the 1988-89 season when PC started the year 0-6
and advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a final record of 22-18-2. The
last time Providence lost two consecutive non-conference contests was
during the 1997-98 season when the Friars were defeated by Dartmouth
College (4-1) on December 28 and then by Colgate (3-2) on January 4.

FREGOE, DISALVATORE TALLY TWO GOALS IN PC’S SEASON-OPENING WEEKEND:  Senior
forward Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) and junior forward Jon DiSalvatore
(South Windsor, Conn.) each scored two goals in the Friars’ season-opening
weekend. Fregoe notched one power-play goal and DiSalvatore scored a
short-handed goal. Also scoring goals for the Friars last weekend were
Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.), who scored short-handed, and sophomore
defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.).

FRIARS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS: ... Providence College was ranked sixth in
the nation in the USA TODAY/American Hockey Magazine's Preseason Poll.
Providence garnered 183 points in the poll, dropping one spot from last
week’s preseason poll.

FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS: The Friars opened the 51st season in Providence
College Hockey History on Friday, October 12 when they were defeated by
third-ranked Michigan, 6-3. The loss to the Wolverines brings the Friars’
all-time record in season openers to 31-19-1.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Friars opened the season at the Maverick Stampede and
converted one of 13 power-play opportunities (0.077). The Providence
penalty killing unit foiled 13 of 16 (0.813) man-advantages for their
opponents.

PROVIDENCE-SACRED HEART SERIES: The Friars and the Pioneers have never met
before. The first meeting between the two teams is Friday, October 19 at
7:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena.

PROVIDENCE VERSUS THE MAAC: Last season, PC posted a 2-0 record against
MAAC squads. The Friars defeated Iona and Holy Cross in 2000-01.

FRIARS IN HOME OPENERS: On Friday, October 19, Providence will host Sacred
Heart in the team’s home opener. PC has posted a 29-21-1 mark all-time in
home openers. Last season, PC defeated Miami (Ohio), 5-0. The Friars most
recent loss in a home opener was on November 13, 1999 when they were
defeated by New Hampshire, 2-1.
