The NCHA Newsletter originates in the office of the NCHA Director of
Information, Terry Owens, at UW-Stevens Point.  All typos are mine.

BEAVERS, POINTERS SPLIT; FALCONS, GREEN KNIGHTS RECORD SWEEPS
 
LAST WEEK:  Bemidji State and UW-Stevens Point split a pair of overtime
games in a battle of the top teams in the league standings while UW-River
Falls and St. Norbert College recorded sweeps, the Falcons on the road
and St. Norbert at home, and UW-Eau Claire and Lake Forest split to
highlight a slight movement in the league standings.
 
THIS WEEK:  League action continues with front-runner Bemidji State
hosting St. Norbert, Superior is at Lake Forest, Eau Claire plays at
Stevens Point, and River Falls travels to St. Scholastica.

FRIDAY:  After spotting Superior the first goal of the game, the Falcons
scored four straight to win.  John Murgatroyd gave UWS a 1-0 lead at 5:08
of the second before UWRF took charge.  They tied it on Eddie MacDonald's
powerplay score at 7:28 of the second and then took the lead for good on
Brian Savage's goal at 16:52 of the same period.  Brian Wilson and Scott
Bachinski added scores in the third for the final margin.  Tom Bachmeier
stopped 30 shots on net for the win.
 
SATURDAY:  Joe Smaza scored a pair of goals, including what proved to be
the game-decider midway through the third period, as the Falcons
completed the sweep.  Dustin Fahl for UWS and Brian Savage for UWRF
tallied first period scores to make it 1-1 after one before Superior took
a 3-1 lead early in the second on back-to-back goals from John
Murgatroyd.  The Falcons then rattled off four straight scores, by Smaza,
Jeff Hubbart, Mike Schauer and Smaza again, to take a 5-3 lead at 8:10 of
the third.  Vince Devlin got it back to a one-goal game at 19:29 of the
third but UWRF held on for the win.  Jeff Heil stopped 27 shots for the
win while Dave Graichen had 13 saves in a losing effort.

FRIDAY:  Eric Monsrud scored on the shorthand 32 seconds into overtime to
give the Beavers the win.  BSU jumped to a 4-1 lead after one on scores
from Ed Melville, Jim Logan, Kris Bjornson and Eric Fulton, sandwiched
around Tyler Johnston's lone score for UWSP.  Point made it 4-2 after two
on Chad Franckowiak's score and then forced the extra play in a wild
final 2:00.  Pat Bogen made it 4-3 at 18:16 of the third on the powerplay
before Casey Howard tied it at 19:37, also on the powerplay, to set up
Monsrud's game-winner.  Robin Cook had 25 saves for the win while Dave
Ketola made 20 stops in a losing effort.
 
SATURDAY:  Mike Zambon scored 44 seconds into overtime to give the
Pointers the split.  Willy Frericks gave Point a 1-0 lead at 1:25 of the
first on the powerplay before Eric Monsrud scored midway through the third
period to tie it and set up Zambon's game-winner.  Dave Ketola stopped 18
shots on net for the win while Robin Cook had 29 saves in a losing effort.

FRIDAY:  Ryan Chase scored a pair of goals to lead the Foresters to the
road win.  David Sass gave LFC the lead at 16:17 of the first before
Chase scored the first of back-to-back goals at 17:16.  He added #2 at
2:12 of the second and Todd McCaslin made it 4-0 at 8:48 of the period.
UWEC got on the board at 18:25 of the second on Matt Ring's score and
added another at 16:51 of the third by Jason Ledford.  Mark MacGilvray
made 26 saves in net for the win.
 
SATURDAY:  The Blugolds got a pair of first period goals and made them
stand up for the split.  Gerry Burrows scored first for UWEC at 10:14
before Cam Cook made it 2-0 with a powerplay goal at 19:05 of the
period.  The Foresters pulled to within 2-1 on Todd McCaslin's powerplay
score at 7:19 of the second but Mark Frank tallied for UWEC at 6:42 of
the third for the final margin.  Bob Thorp stopped 32 shots on net for the
win.

FRIDAY:  Jason Sanford recorded the hat trick with two powerplays and a
shorthander to lead the Green Knights to the win.  Cameron Knox gave SNC
a 1-0 lead at 3:21 of the first on the powerplay but Sean Storie tied it
at 10:11 of the second, also on the powerplay, before Sanford exploded.
He gave St. Norbert the lead for good at 11:58 of the second on the
powerplay and then added a shorthander at 8:25 of the third and another
powerplay at 14:43 of the final period.  Scott Vettraino had 36 saves in
net for the win.
 
SATURDAY:  Cameron Knox and Jason Sanford each scored twice and Scott
Vettraino stpped all 30 shots on net for the shutout and a sweep.  Knox
and Mike Porcaro made it 2-0 after one and then Knox and a pair by
Sanford in the second period made it 5-0 before the teams skated through
a scoreless third period.

NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
 
Jason Sanford, Fr, F, St. Norbert College, Williams Lake, BC
 
Jason Sanford is the first NCHA Player of the Week of 1995.  Sanford led
the way in the Green Knights' sweep of St. Scholastica, recording a hat
trick in Friday's 4-1 win and adding a pair of goals in Saturday's 5-0
win.  He had three powerplay goals and one shorthander.
 
Also nominated were Dave Ketola, a goaltender from UW-Stevens Point, who
had a 1.09 gaa and 38 saves in 40 chances against Bemidji State; John
Murgatroyd, a center from UW-Superior, who had four goals and three
assists against UW-River Falls; Aaron Arf, a defenseman from UW-River
Falls, who had two assists and "excellent defensive play" in a sweep of
UW-Superior; Eric Monsrud, a winger from Bemidji State, who had a pair of
goals, including Friday's game-winner in overtime, against UW-Stevens
Point; and Bob Thorp, a goaltender from UW-Eau Claire, who had 32 saves
in Saturday's 3-1 win over Lake Forest.
