For What its worth...
I seem to remember something about the NHL making a ruling that
Cooperalls were not to be worn.  I'm sure this helped lead to
their demise and that they weren't abandoned just for fashions sake.
I dont' know if college hockey made a similar ruling.
I never wore them myself (because of money, not fashion) but a few
friend who did seemed to like them
