Thanks to Foster Sarah for that posting. I really enjoyed it a lot. It
also is timely for me. I have an 11 year old son and he is just
getting into youth hockey here in Ithaca and becoming a serious
Cornell hockey fan. I hope that he can enjoy the game as much as I
do without becoming over involved. I actually think he is off on the
right road and I have Cornell's disastrous season of last year to
partially thank. Sort of paralleling the story I decided to go to the
ECAC's last year in Lake Placid with my son and a college roommate
and his son. It had been a long time since I had been to an ECAC or
NCAA tournament and I had always gone in the past to see Cornell
play. But this time I just wanted to see some good college hockey
(having been denied that treat in Lynah last season) and a chance to
do some Nordic skiing (I'll trust the readers of this list to know the
difference between Alpine and Nordic but I seem to spend a lot of
time explaining it here in the frozen north of Ithaca, NY) on the
Olympic trails at Mt. Van Hovenberg (Excellent skiing highly
recommended for all ages and skill levels!). We all had a great time
and Cornell was not there. This week end we are going to see
Cornell play at home against Harvard and Brown and my son and I
are eager to see how we will do against teams we saw in the ECAC's
last spring. Of course it is fun to root for your favorite team and
know them in great detail but in the long run you will need to enjoy
the game itself. Very seldom will you be able to enjoy seasons
where "your" team marches to the national championship--I've seen
two in about 25 years and I feel lucky.
