summary:
BU closed out the season with a not-so-impressive display of
defense (not to be outmatched by Providence, though) with a 12-6 win over
the Friars in a shoot-out at Schneider Arena on Friday.
(note: that should be "regular season" above, not "season" -- whoops)

Steve Thornton tallied his second hat-trick of the season and
Doug Friedman and Rich Brennan both added a pair of goals to pace the
Terriers. Craig Darby notched a pair for the Friars.

As you might guess, the scoring opened early and never really let
up. Steve Thornton got BU on the board at 1:05 with a re-direct of Steve
Foster's shot from the point, then at 5:24 Jacques Joubert took a pass from
Rich Brennan and beat PC goalie Brad Mullahy for a quick 2-0 lead. PC turned
things around at 9:33 when Jon LaVerre picked up his own rebound and wheeled
a shot around BU netminder Derek Herlofsky to put the Friars on the board.
Just a minute and a half later, at 11:02, Bob Cowan won a face-off deep in the
BU zone and passed it back to Craig Darby, whose slapper from the point was
all net, (like most shots that night) knotting things at 2. Cowan got opn
for himself just 1:29 when Dennis Burke fed him in the slot, giving PC the
lead. But Steve Thornton got his second of the period for BU with just 00:23
left when he lifted a nice backhander over Mullahy's glove for the 3-3 tie.

Things picked up right where they left off from the first, when
Kevin O'Sullivan took a pass from Dave Sacco and beat Mullahy at 00:29
for the BU go-ahead goal. But the Friars returned the favor just 29 seconds
later on the 5x4 when Chris Therien poked a Craig Darby rebound through
Herlofsky's pads for another tie score, this time at 4. Things were quiet
until Therien took a seat for tripping Sacco at 5:25; Kaj Linna got his
2nd of the season on his shot from the point at 6:29 on the only BU PPG all
night. Sacco got revenge less than a minute later at 7:24 when he beat
Mullahy all alone for a 2-goal BU lead. (This goal puts Dave Sacco at #2
among all-time BU scoring leaders!)

PC fought their way back once again, when Brian Ridolfi and Craig
Darby walked in a 2-on-1 and Darby flicked a drop pass over Herlofsky's stick
to cut the BU lead to 6-5. At 12:29 Rich Brennan went off for a trip for
a PC man-advantage. However, 25 seconds into the play, Dave Sacco was hit
from behind and fell down across the goal line, where he lay for about 5
seconds while PC continued to move the puck around. Sacco showed no signs
of movement, but there was still no whistle. Then Mark Devine walked in and
flipped the puck into the net, and although the goal light did not come on,
Referee Rich Fowkes signalled a goal (with Sacco still laying across the
line). Can anyone explain why the play wasn't whistled after Sacco
had been down for several seconds? BU looked like they were expecting the
whistle and gave up playing, so Devine just shot the puck in the net.
(I think play should have been called when Sacco was down, but since there
was no whistle BU shouldn't have quit, expecting to hear one.)
The Friars took advantage of the opportunity to replace Mullahy with Bob
Bell, but it didn't make much of a difference. Just under 2 minutes later
Rich Brennan took a pass from Steve Thornton at the blue line and walked
in all alone (again, something we saw a lot of that night) and poked it
right through Bell's legs for the 7-6 go-ahead goal (and game winner).
At 18:57 Thornton completed the trick when he took a pass across the crease
from Jay Pandlofo and caught all net for a 2-goal BU lead. 61 seconds later
Brennan (who also had a pair in the 7-6 OT win over Maine) got his second
of the game on a shot from the top of the point that sailed through traffic
for a 9-6 BU lead at the end of 2.
In the 3rd both teams looked weary, especially the Friars, who had
been dominating the checking game for most of the going. At 3:06 Doug Friedman
got the first of his pair on a pass from Joubert, then at 15:55 Joubert and
Petteri Koskimaki assisted on Friedman's second of the game for the 11-6
BU lead. At 16:50, BU put the lid on things when Mike Prendergast caught
a Sacco pass and beat Bell on a low shot for the 12-6 final.
It may not have been pretty, especially after a 2-hour trip down
I-95 in a blizzard (normally takes 45 mins.), but this was BU's first win
at Schneider since 1987 (Terriers were 0-7-3 in that time.)
BU faces HE arch-rival Boston College next weekend at Brown Arena
in the opening round of the league playoffs, while the #5 seed Friars travel
to Tully Forum to take on #4 seed UMass-Lowell in what is sure to be a
tough matchup. (thanks, Mike for posting all HE playoff info).
