Sunday, 2/28/93: Providence 3 - UNH 0

Providence won the ECAC title for the second year in a row, when they
out-skated New Hampshire. No matter how much power UNH tried to
generate, they were always getting beat to the puck by the speed of
the Lady Friars. PC gets full marks for this well earned victory.

The Lady Friars opened the scoring late in the first period, when
Cammi Granato (Karen McCabe) skated the puck out of the right corner,
stick handled by several defenders, and then shot it in at the far
post. Brilliant goal! Michelle Johansson (Wendy Cofran) made it 2-0,
on a two on one break-in play down the left wing. Johansson's quick
shot beating the goalie at the near post. There was no scoring in
the second period. The third period found Lynn Manning (Stephanie
O'Sullivan) putting the game away, when she shot home a re-bound.

The game got off to a slow start, as both teams appeared nervous.
When Providence did get its skating legs moving, their team speed
was too much for UNH to handle. The line of Cofran, Melissa Mills
and Kathleen Brophy played splendidly. I was again impressed with the
speed of Alana Blahoski. Wendy Cofran had several rushes which were
thrilling. On defense, Chris Bailey had a strong game, stopping New
Hampshire attacks, and setting up plays for her mates. Cammi Granato
played a wonderful match. Her speed and puck control had her all
over the ice. For the Wildcats of UNH, Karyn Bye tried to lead her
team back into the match, but each time she was stopped by the speed
of Providence.

Awards: The ECAC Senior of the year was Cammi Granato. The MVP
for the Final Four was Northeastern's Shelly Looney (for her hat-
trick in a great semi-final match). I would have given the MVP
to Granato, because while Providence won the title as a team,
she was the dominating player on the ice.

There was an annoucement that the game will be shown on ESPN on
March 12th.
