This was a rather poorly played game. It could have easily been a
9-9 tie instead with all of the open nets missed in this game. Skaters were
sluggish, the officiating was atypically poor (yes, that's right... it is
usually good), and boredom was the name of the game with the exception of the
last 10 minutes of play.
The scoring began with UAA scoring on the power play. It was a simple
deflection on a shot from the top of the right circle. Kent State came back
less than a minute later with their first score. Claude Morin took a slow shot
from 10 feet _outside_ the blueline. By the way that Krake reacted to the
shot, it looked like he was screened by his defensemen on the shot.
Regardless, it was a very soft goal. UAA finished off the scoring in the first
period with the rebound of Dean Larsons' shot being stuffed in by Mitch Kean.
In the second period, things slowed down and the ref took the stage.
Three sets of concurrent penalies (which were played 3-3 or 4-4) occured,
making 10 of the first 12 minutes of play 3-3 or 4-4. Talk about slow. Of
course, Kent State also scored 3 times in the second which may affect my
judgement :). It started with another soft goal when a Steve McLean took the
puck behind UAAs' net. He was knocked off it, hard, but the puck was picked
up by Bob Krosky off the right side. Problem is, Krake thought McLean went
all the way around and was guarding the left side of the net. Krosky shot it
into the open net without hindrance. After this play, Krake was yanked from
the net and Gravistin was put in. Although he gave up two goals later in the
period, he did quite well IMHO.
The end of the third period was very interesting. The score was 4-2
Kent State with less than four minutes left in the game and UAA shorthanded.
It didn't look good for UAA. However, Dean Larson set up a 2-1 break with a
long pass. Derek Donald drew off the defenseman and passed it perfectly to
Jeff Batters for the 1-0. Batters first shot hit Lacasse in the pads but he
stuffed the rebound through. Then, a little more than a minute later, Mitch
Kean tried a centering pass which deflected off of a Kent State players'
skate and into the net. Although not pretty, this tying goal leaves UAA
8-0-1 against other Independents.
The crowd was rocking for the overtime period. UAA had several open
net opportunities but did not capitalize. The best chance they had was when
Mario Lacasses was given a two minute penalty for delay of game with 3:08
left in the game. UAA had four centers, one wing, and one goalie playing the
power play. Although they completely dominated the power play and got several
close shots, they failed to score. The time ticked down and the game ended a
tie.
The Seawolf team I saw last night is not the same one I saw at the
beginning of the season. They lacked hustle and had a horrendous team
defense, allowing 35 shots by another independent. I will give Mario Lacasse
my player of the game Virtual Ceramic Dalmation for his 47 saves. Kent State
played, as a team, very inconsistantly with a huge number of missed passed
and other miscues. This is definitely a game I don't want to watch the tape
of.
