LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) -- Canada, behind two goals each from
Angela James and Danielle Goyette, defeated the United States 6-3
Sunday to win the gold medal at the women's hockey world
championships.
Canada, which also beat the USA for the gold medal in the first
two world championships in 1990 and 1992, is 15-0 overall in the
three tournaments.
The United States took the silver medal. Finland won the bronze
with an 8-1 victory over China.
Canada trailed 1-0 entering the second period before Goyette
scored on a power play to ignite a three-goal outburst in the
period's first five minutes. James scored the other two goals.
``Those first four or five minutes were Team Canada at its
best,'' Canada coach Les Lawton said. ``We were a little flat to
start. I thought we had butterflies.''
Stephanie O'Sullian's power-play goal late in the second period
cut the lead to 3-2, but Goyette converted a rebound to make it 4-2
at 4:20 of the third. Stacy Wilson's power-play goal at 11:51 made
it 5-2 before Cammi Granato cut into the lead with a goal at 12:03.
Canada ended the American comeback when France St. Louis scored
on a 3-on-1 break at 14:07.
``The penalties caught up with us,'' U.S. coach Karen Kay said.
``You can't take those kinds of penalties against a quality team
like them. The penalties took away from our flow and they made us
pay.''
Karyn Bye scored the other goal for the United States.
Sweden defeated Norway 6-3 to take fifth place. Switzerland
edged Germany 4-3 for seventh place.
