Announced in the Star Tribune this morning a wierd twist to the battle to get
the Gopher game on Sunday on TV. (In an article by John Roe)
A number of people --- at KITN-TV, the University, Midwest Sports channel and
the public access channel -- had to jump through hoops to work out an
arrangement whereby the Gophers may be seen live on Regional Channel 6 or on
tape delay on MSC. Which way had not been determined Thursday night, but both
channels had expressed interest in the game.
"It's unfortunate," said Gail Brekke, KITN-TV general manager. "But the costs
for rights from the NCAA and the production costs are prohibitive."
But KITN programming director Dale Palecek, along with Dan Meinert, the
Gophers men's assistant athletic director, finally found out a station in
Alaska was trying to televise the Anchorage-Lake Superior State game tonight.
The station also wanted to carry the Sunday game (against Minnesota) if
Anchorage advanced.
SO watch the local papers and news to see if we'll get the coverage we need.
Also the Timberwolves have agreed to forgo their pre-game show on Sunday and
that means from noon till 2:30 pm the Gopher game WILL be on KFAN and if it
goes past 2:30 it will switch to KJJO.
Maybe they are beginning to appreciate the hockey Gophers after all. :-)
More news as it becomes available.
