The UConn roof is dead!! Long live the new barn!!
In the northeast, today was a day just too tempting not to take off.
Spring is springing out all over. The golfers were out, the kayakers
were doing their thing. It's been a long season.
Drove over to Storrs for a little R & R to look at the progress on the new
rink. Drove in from the back way, past the baseball field. Wow! What
a shock. Nothing there. You can look right into the south end of the
soccer stadium. The old Eero Sarinen designed roof with the heavy curved
laminated beams -- gone, not a trace. The hunting lodge/warming house
from the early 1900's, complete with the window shutters with the "CSC"
cutouts (CT State College) -- gone, no trace. The slab with
refrigeration and the compressor house are all that remain. About fifteen
folks in hard hats were huddled over some laid out drawings. A fence
around the whole enclosure. Quite a few construction trailers. This
thing is on the fast track.
After waiting so many years for this, all I can say is "Wow, that was
fast!!" Now I can't wait until next Fall, even as I suppress a little
bittersweet sadness for the old rink and warming house. Time marches on.
