Students camping outside Alfond Arena the afternoon before ticket
distribution can mean only one thing at the University of Maine:
Boston University's coming to town.

With three minutes remaining in the third period, an eerie chant
could be heard coming from the crowd. Boston University was lead-
ing 4-3 and in control, but Maine refused to give up, even though
it was forced to fetch the puck each time BU cleared it out of
the zone.

But Ken Rausch took a pass from Steve Foster and Kaj Linna to
put the game away with 2:05 remaining to seal the win for the
Terriers.

It was a see-saw affair until the second period, when Boston U
took control of the puck, the boards, and the ice, pushing Black
Bear players out of the way while on offense and clearing the
puck from the Maine's offensive zone while on defense.

Maine's Dan Shermerhorn (could wrong, hard to hear the PA) open-
ed the scoring in the first period when he converted a pass off
a face off from Marcel Pineau, at 6:09 into the period. BU's
Mike Pomichter tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at
11:16 into the period.

A little more than a minute later Paul Kariya scored for Maine
when the BU goalie failed to hold onto the puck. The goalie
intercepted the shot and looked down, only to see the pick drib-
ble behind him and into the net to put Maine back on top, 2-1.

From there it was all BU. Steve Thornton took a pass from M.
Prendergast on a 2-on-1 against Maine goalie Blair Marsh to make
it 3-1 BU. After BU scored again, at the 12:42 mark into the
second period, Maine head coach Shawn Walsh had seen enough and
called a time out, most likely in hopes of calming his young
players down.

At 19:00 into the period Mike Latendresse scored for Maine, put-
ting the Black Bears within one.
