Summary:

Union College opened its 3rd season of Division I hockey with a 4-3
non-league win over McGill University. The rookie forwards led Union
to a 4-1 lead before junior goalie Luigi Villa took over in the third.

McGill took a 1-0 lead just 90 seconds in. The Dutchmen answered only 16
seconds later when Cory Holbrough sent freshmen Jay Prentice and Troy
Stevens in on a 2-on-1 break. Prentice carried the puck in, slid a
pass to Stevens who put it past Miguel. Union dominated the rest of
the period, but could not score again.

The Dutchmen controlled most of the second period, and jumped out to a
4-1 lead on goals by Chris Albert, Bill Moody, and Chad Thompson. All
three goals came in a span of under 3 minutes. McGill pulled within
4-2 with a goal at 15:31.

After outshooting McGill 25-12 in the first 2 periods, the Redmen came
back to outshoot the Dutchmen 19-8 in the third. Villa was able to
stop all but and Union held on for the 4-3 win.

Union is now 1-0, and has yet to play an ECAC game. The win is
Union's first to open a season since moving up to Division I in
1991-92. McGill falls to 2-7 on the season. There was really a lot
to like in this game. The Dutchmen showed that they have the
offensive talent that should help them improve on last season's
average of just over 2 goals per game. Union played the game without
Senior captain Jeff Jiampetti, a Geology major, who was on a field
trip for his thesis work. Junior defenseman Dean Goulet and Sophomore
forward Chris Sears also sat out the game. Union travels to West
Point next weekend for another non-league game before opening their
ECAC season with the tough North Country trip against SLU and Clarkson
on Nov 12-13.
