The UM Black Bears claimed their second tourney crown in Six consecutive
appearences in the HocketEast title game with a 4-1 victory over UNH. The
Wildcats came out and took the momentum early after All-Tournament Goalie Jeff
Levy made some incredible saves in the early going, and Scott Morrow broke in
and put a shot past Maine Goalie Mike Dunham, staking UNH to a 1-0 lead. Levy
continued his incredible performance, but couldn't turn away blast after blast
from the Maine sticks, and Tournament MVP Scott Pellerin finally tied it,and put
Maine up 2-1 with an incredible short-handed goal. UMaine forward Kent Salfi,
who has been playing inspired hockey of late, scored when he gather the puck ins
ide his own blue line and started up ice. The UNH defensemen must have thought
that he was going to dump the puck, because they were left to just watch helples
sly as #22 raced in alone to make it 3-1! Salfi scored again to make it 4-1
after 2;and both goalies gave standout performances in the third as UM finally
broke the "Garden Jinx" and won its second title. UM placed Pellerin,Forward
Jim Montgomery and Defenseman Chris Imes on the All-Tourney Team, with Pellerin
earning MVP honors.
Now its "wait-and-see"time as the NC$$ bids come out next Sunday.
I haven't seen anyone speculating, but I'm wondering if the BU loss to BC might
cost BU the chance to stay in the East for the NC$$'s. Under the format #'s
5 and 6 in the East play #'s 4 and 3 in the West. With UM a #1 seed,UNH or SLU
#2(the other #3),will Providence take the #4 seed with its win in the HE Q-Fina
ls?-forcing BU out West to face the likes of UMich.,UMinn,etc. That would be
a REAL SHAME! (NOT!!!!!!!!)
Anyway, now its time to recover from the 4+ hour bus trip back here
to Orono this AM(we pulled into Alfond at 3:45 AM). Then its time for the
OTHER version of MARCH MADNESS-the basketball tournaments.
