I was in a discussion on a Junior hockey message board and made the
comment that in the NCAA, it is against the rules to "pull" a
scholarship based on hockey performance. This was my take on what i
thought I had seen on the list.Someone posted the following:
You are mistaken, it is not against the rules to pull a scholarship.
Some examples of this are at University of Alaska Anchorage and
Michigan Tech University this season. Both schools had first year
coaches this year and ended up cutting players either during the
season or after the season was over and ending their scholarships.
Scholarships are renewed on a yearly basis but it is kind of an
unwritten rule that when a player is offered a full 4 year
scholarship, then he receives it. Although this is a problem with new
coaches who come in and try to make changes. Although at Northern
Michigan this year, two players were cut, losing their sholarship, by
the coach that they originally signed with. If a player is cut during
the season then he must remain on scholarship for the remainder of the
year.
I know that I've seen this discussed on the list before. Can someone
enlighten em as to what the rules are? I'm going to check the NC$$
site...
