Debbie and Tony have already mentioned Botterill and Kealty,
but here's a quick synopsis of the first two rounds "college
connection" and some Michigan comments.

First Round [overall selection number]:
[10] Landon Wilson, a sophomore forward at the University
of North Dakota and 1993-94 WCHA Rookie-of-the-Year,
was part of THE major trade of the day, going from Toronto
to Quebec. The primaries in the deal were Wendel Clark and
Mats Sundin. All of this took place as Quebec was preparing
to make the 10th selection overall. The pick was sent to
Toronto as part of the trade. The Maple Leafs promptly traded
the selection to Washington.

[20] Dallas selected Jason Botterill, a sophomore LW from
the University of Michigan. Local reports indicated that the
Red Wings REALLY wanted to get Botterill with the 23rd pick,
but felt that he would be gone by then. They were right. :-)

[22] Quebec selected Jeff Kealty, a D from Catholic Memorial
HS who will be a freshman at Boston University this fall. Kealty
did NOT look enthused to be selected by Quebec...not hard
to imagine from a kid who grew up with the Broons.

Second Round:
[39] Vancouver selected Robb Gordon, a C from Powell River
of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League and an incoming
freshman at the University of Michigan.

There were two other "possibles" taken in the second round,
but I'm not familiar enough with the players to know if they are
future NC$$ers. With the 32nd pick, Edmonton selected Mike
Watt, a LW/C from Stratford Jr B and with the 36th pick,
Philadelphia selected Ryan Johnson, a C with Thunder Bay
in the USHL.

Michigan Notes:
Incoming freshman forward Matt Herr [Hotchkiss Prep in CT]
has already been drafted...in the 29th round by the Atlanta
Braves! He's likely to go somewhere in rounds 3-5 of the
NHL draft. The ANN ARBOR NEWS also listed incoming
players Chris Fox, Bill Muckalt and Marty Turco, and
sophomores Chris Frescoln, Harold Schock and Blake
Sloan as draft possibilities.

Coaching Notes:
[1] Former Ferris State University head coach John Perpich
has been hired as an assistant by the LA Kings.

[2] Former Mass-Lowell star and four-time Stanley Cup winner
['85,'87,'88,'94] Craig MacTavish has retired as an active
player to take over as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.
MacTavish was the last NHLer to be grandfathered under
the no-helmet rule.
