The NCAA requires that teams using Native American mascots must have
approval of the tribe(s) involved. North Dakota couldn't get their
Sioux tribes to come to an agreement on the use of the Sioux name as
an athletic mascot. So a few years back, they switched:

- As I understand the policy, it may not absolutely forbid such
mascots, but the penalties for using them are pretty stiff.
Specifically, you're banned from post-season play.

- Florida State got the Seminole people on board, so they can
continue using their mascot.

- I'm not sure if this applies to institution names (Miami of Ohio,
Miami, probably others).

- Apparently this policy doesn't apply to people of European origin,
so Union continues being the Dutch(men|women).

- If you've watched the NCAA tournament since the change, you'll see
that there are still a lot of Fighting Sioux jerseys in circulation.
