At Achilles rink in Schenectady, the RPI Engineers defeated the Union
Dutchmen 8 to 2

Scoring by Period:

RPI 5 2 1 - 8
Union 1 0 1 - 2

Due to inclement weather, I arrived at the rink about 7:40 or 7:45 and
when I arrived, the scoreboard already read 1-0 RPI. While looking around for
our seats, RPI scored 2 goals and it was obvious that this game was a mismatch.
Union got a big chance to make the game close late in the first period when
Kelly Askew got a 5 minute major for checking from behind. But Union soon
took 2 quick penalties and RPI was up for a 4 on 3 and scored the only(?)
power play goal of the game.
In the second period, Gallant was replaced by Villa in goal for Union.
But Villa gave up 2 somewhat soft goals and Gallant came back in net.
In the third period, RPI took out Neil Little and put in their goalie
of the future,Mike Tamburro. The good news for RPI fans is that Neil won't
be leaving behind a vacuum. Tamburro made several tough saves including one
on a 1 on none. RPI scored quickly in the beginning of the period to make it
8-1 and people were already starting to leave. Then at about 2:30 of the third
period a check on someone into the boards shattered one of the plexiglass
sheets, stopping play for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, many of
the Union fans left. When play resumed, RPI did not play with as much heart
as they had earlier while Union seemed to be playing with renewed vigor.
RPI did get some quality shots on goal but Gallant was up to the task.
Union scored a goal at about the 17 minute mark of the 3rd but it was too
little, too late.
In general, RPI looked quick and well organized while Union had a lot of
trouble organizing their attack and made many defensive errors. These 2 teams
meet again tomorrow night at RPI.
