BIG MAN ON CAMPUS
Who will replace Maine's Kariya as college hockey's best player?
[...commentary deleted...]
Jim Carey, Wisconsin
Brian Holzinger, Bowling Green
Kaj Linna, Boston Univ
Neil Little, RPI
Mike Murray, UMass-Lowell
Jamie Ram, Mich Tech
Shawn Reed, Colorado College
Steve Shields, Michigan
Sean Tallaire, Lake Superior
Marko Tuomainen, Clarkson
The article included brief comments on each player. Obvious errors
including calling Ram "the nation's busiest goalie in 1992-93, playing 36
games." Shields started 39 of Michigan's 40 games last season. Another
blunder was this comment: "It's amazing Shields doesn't receive more
recognition." The guy has been plastered all over almost every college
hockey publication, including the current covers of DROP THE PUCK Weekly
Update and COLLEGE HOCKEY JOURNAL. (Admittedly, there is a "time" element
considering THN had already went to print, but Shields has been a media
darling since mid-summer.)
Note: I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, just that he isn't
"unrecognized." Maybe the media is making up for dogging Shields for the
past three years. :-)
