The sixth-ranked Penn State Icers took to the road for the first time this
season, and were able to shake off last week's loss to the Ohio Bobcats. On
Friday, the Icers opened the 1993-94 Atlantic Collegiate Hockey League season
with a hard-fought 7-4 win over the tenth-ranked Delaware Blue Hens, and then
traveled to Maryland, where the Icers clobbered the Terrapins 18-2.

Going into Friday's game, the Blue Hens were off to an impressive start,
sporting a 6-0-2 overall record and a 13-5 win against ACHL foe Maryland.
Delaware opened the scoring nearly midway through the first period on the
power play, but the Icers evened it up just 91 seconds later on a goal by
Chad Markowitz. Delaware would score again on a power play goal by Ron
Forcino, and the Hens led the Icers 2-1 after one. But Penn State would score
twice early in the second, both on the power play (a 5-3 and 5-4 advantage),
and the Icers were up 3-2. Delaware would manage to tie it up as Forcino
scored off of a defensive turnover by the Icers, but John Farrall and Mark
Konchar would each score for Penn State later in the period, and the Icers were
up 5-3 after the second period. Delaware would close to within one with an
early goal in the third, but Konchar would complete his hat trick and Scott
Shell would add one more, and the Icers won, 7-4.

So then it was on to face the University of Maryland Terrapins. Maryland,
who was 0-5-0 as of Friday, was no match for the Icers, who appeared very much
like the Icers of last season. Brad Russell registered four goals for the
Icers. Not much of a story here, so we'll let the box score tell it (I
apologize for any missing information).

The Icers are now 5-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the ACHL. Penn State returns to
the Ice Pavilion this weekend for two more ACHL contests. On Friday, the
Icers will entertain the Golden Rams of West Chester (PA) University, while
on Saturday, it's the rematch with the Blue Hens of Delaware. Penn State
will be without two of their best players this weekend, as Don Lamison
suffered a "deep thigh contustion" on Friday, and Mark Cervellero suffered a
shoulder separation on Saturday.

(All stats taken either from the WMAJ - 1450 AM radio broadcasts of the games
or the weekend editions of the _Centre Daily Times_)
