Since we've been pushing around the subject of of new rules and regsin
college hockey, how about some realchanges.  These would go far beyond
instituting shoot-outs to decide game outcomes.  These suggestions were put
forward by the august Bill Clement, who I think everyone will agree is one of
the top three hockey commentators.  Bill's comments stem from his opinion that
the NHL must jazz up and speed up its game to attract younger viewers.
1. Eliminate the red line.  I think this is a great idea.  It would certainly
end all the mid-ice interference and all-around mugging that seems to go on.
2. Shorten periods to 18 minutes.  Also has some appeal.  Would allow overtimes
in the regular season.
3. Shorten or eliminate one intermission.  Not bad either.  How many times have
you watched second periods which are just interminable.  Not many games I can
think of with memorable seconds, except of course LSSU and Maine.
Everyone remove your coats of ideological purity and offer some comments.  How
would strategies change if these rules were introduced?
