This is from Bob Monahan's article in the Boston Globe, 2/14/93.

"The University of Massachusetts reportedly is considering at least three
candidates for the $85,000 job as head hockey coach.

"A source close to the scene said the leading candidates are Springfield
Indians coach Jay Leach, St Lawrence coach Joe Marsh and Boston College
assistant Joe Mallen.

"Leach, the older brother of Bruins winger Steve Leach, is a native of
Lexington, played Division 2 hockey at the University of New Haven and went
on to a minor league career. He was an assistant coach at Merrimack under
Ron Anderson, and when Shawn Walsh took over at the University of Maine,
Leach went with him. Leach then spent three seasons as an assistant with
the Hartford Whalers and now he's in charge of the Whalers' American Hockey
League affiliate.

"Marsh is a native of Lynn, attended Lynn English High School, Exeter
Academy and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1977. He
coached at New Hampton Prep and Choate and now is in his eighth season at
St Lawrence with a 171-88-9 record. Marsh is the first coach in St
Lawrence history to post four 20-win seasons.

"Mallen was brought up in Dorchester, attended Christopher Columbus High
School and went on to Michigan Tech, where he graduated in 1977. Mallen
coached at UMass-Boston for six years and had an 86-48-2 record. He spent
one year as an assistant at US International in San Diego, then joined BC
for the 1986-87 season."

I will only add that recently I had also heard that Jay Leach was a leading
candidate. Springfield was 18-28-8, 4th in the AHL's Northern Division, as
of Saturday.
