Fans sitting in hte west end (where the viiting keeper played first and
third periods) at San Diego Gulls minor-league games long followed the
practice of chanting the visiting keepers name several times, followed by
everyone in the end standing up and shouting "You Suck!" during pre-game
warmups, which is honestly too soon to tell.
But it worked well once -
The leading San Diego sportscaster fot a few years, Ted Leitner, hated
hockey. All he would show for NHL highlights was a few seconds of game
fights: "There, you got your hockey." In a clever marketing ploy, the
Gulls had a "Ted Leitner Night". Everyone was given a Ted Leitner mask,
and he was seating in one of the VIP boxes halfway up the stands. Before
the game, the chant of "Leitner...Leitner... Leitner..." started up from
the rowdies in the west end. As Ted rose to bow and recognize his "fans",
the whole arena, pretty much in unison, chanted "You suck!"
