MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO ST. LAWRENCE
Nationally-ranked Saints kill off 13 power plays in 3-2 win

St. Lawrence University scored two second period goals and were successful
on 13 of 14 penalty kill situations and defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI), 3-2, in a Division I ECAC Hockey League men's hockey game
at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, St. Lawrence,
the 13th-ranked team in the nation, improves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in
the ECACHL. Rensselaer, which entered the game ranked sixth in the nation
on the power play, falls to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.

RPI jumped on top on a Kirk MacDonald goal 4:07 into the first period. The
team's leading scorer and fifth in the nation MacDonald notched his tenth
goal of the season when he fired a shot into the upper right corner just as
an Engineers' power play had expired. Kevin Croxton earned his eleventh
assist of the season and Nick Economakos his tenth on the goal, which came
at 4:07 of the first period. St. Lawrence's Drew Bagnall tied the game
1:42 later when he drilled a slap shot into the back of the net for a power
play goal. John Zeiler and T.J. Trevelyan were credited with assists on
the play.

Rensselaer regained the lead at 7:10 of the second period when senior
defenseman Matt McNeely scored on a slap shot from the middle of the
face-off circles. Economakos and defenseman Brad Farynuk tallied assists
on the goal, which was a power play marker. The visiting Saints fought
back with the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead after two periods. Zeiler,
a junior, tied the game with a power play goal from the left face-off
circle at 14:42 and Chase Trull, also a junior, scored on a blast from the
center of the blueline. Stace Page and Bagnall set up Zeiler's goal and
Colin FitzRandolph and Jamie Parker earned the helpers on Trull's goal,
which came at the 18:10 mark.

Mike McKenna made 30 saves for the Saints, including 14 in the second
period and 11 in the third, to improve to 5-4-1. Andrew Martin finished
with 32 saves, including 11 in each of the first two periods, for the
Engineers.

RPI returns to action when they will face area-rival Union in a
home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday's game will be
in Troy while Saturday's contest will be in Schenectady. Both games begin
at 7pm. St. Lawrence will entertain Vermont and Dartmouth next Friday and
Saturday nights at 7pm.
