UAF Hockey Team Blanks British Columbia

FAIRBANKS, AK-The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ hockey team threw up a tight defense and freshman goaltender Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK/Victoria BCHL) earned his second consecutive shutout as the Nanooks blanked British Columbia, 5-0, in an exhibition game at the Patty Center Friday night.

Rogers had to make just 13 saves. He shut out Alaska Anchorage last Saturday night in his UAF debut.

Alaska Fairbanks and the Thunderbirds battled to a scoreless tie after one period as UBC goaltender Chris Levesque made 13 saves. Freshman left wing Kyle Greentree (Victoria, BC/Victoria-BCHL) ignited a three-goal outburst when he beat Levesque at 7:22 of the second period. Freshman defenseman Darcy Campbell (Airdrie, AB/Olds-AJHL) made it 2-0 just 1:54 later, and senior center Jared Sylvestre (Bonnyville, AB/Bonnyville-AJHL) capped the outburst with a goal at the 11:14 mark.

Freshman left wing Adam Powell (Fairbanks, AK/Chilliwack-BCHL) scored twice in the third period and finished the game with two goals and one assist for three points. Both of Powell’s goals were power play goals.

Sylvestre finished with two points on a goal and an assist after helping on Powell’s second goal. Senior Corbin Schmidt (Anchorage, AK/Tri-City-USHL) had two assists, and Levesque finished with 33 saves. The Nanooks converted two of eight power play opportunities, while UBC was scoreless in six chances.

UAF and British Columbia will conclude their two-game series Saturday night at the Patty Center.
