I travelled down the turnpike to see the other Falcons, Air Force, play
Saturday night against Notre Dame. First is the box from Saturday followed
by a small blurb that may appear in The College Hockey Weekly.

IRISH SWEEP FALCONS

In its final home games as an independent, Notre Dame swept Air Force,
8-3 and 3-2.

Friday night, the Irish opened up a 5-1 lead after two periods and
coasted to the victory with a third-period hat trick by Curtis
Janicke.

Saturday, Notre Dame looked to ring up more tallies when they put 10
quick shots on Falcon goalie Mark Liebich. But Liebich was steady in
net and only allowed Brent Lamppa to slip one past him at 3:35 of the
first. UND speedster Michael Curry scored at the mid-point of the
second period on the power play.

Down 2-0 starting the third, the Falcons came out flying and managed to
knot the score with a pair of man-advantage markers just 30 seconds
apart. Tony Roe slapped home the first while two men up and Jason
Mantaro scored the equalizer 5-on-4.

It took less than two minutes for the Irish to regain the lead as
Janicke fired the puck over Liebichs shoulder. UND tightened its
defense and killed off two more USAFA power plays to hold on for the
win.

Liebich made 29 saves and Greg Louder stopped 17 for the Irish.

Both teams conclude their seasons with a trip to Fairbanks to
participate in the Independent Tournament on March 6-7. Air Force
(11-19) will face Alaska-Anchorage in the first game while Notre Dame
(11-17-1) battles Alaska-Fairbanks in the second. The Irish and the
Falcons could meet for the fifth time this season in either the
championship or consolation game of the tournament.
