Whenever Harvard plays Cornell at Lynah Rink, the Cornell
students throw dead fish on the ice when Harvard comes out immediately
before the start of the game. A warning is read, and if anyone throws
anything thereafter (like when the Crimson come out after an
intermission), something is most certainly done. Cornell is assessed
a bench minor. This used to be an annual occurrence; in February 1995
the Crimson scored the game's first goal on the resulting power play
and went on to win 2-1.
(q.v. http://www.amurgsval.org/~squishy/fish.1.4.html) The warning
has been heeded the first time in every game since, and Cornell has
gone 7-0-1 against Harvard. So deterrence does work.

PS--Don't let's start the fish debate again. Saturday's
Cornell-Harvard game is at Bright, not Lynah. OTOH, I'd be happy to
see BYU take a couple more bench minors for fans standing on the
boards Friday like they did the last time Utah came to their outdoor
rink. ;-)
