As you all know by now, Colorado College and Michigan will meet for the 1996
National Championship Saturday at 1 p.m.

This marks the first time since 1992 that no Eastern team (Hockey East
actually) has been in the championship game. In 1992 Lake Superior State
defeated Wisconsin for the title.

Colorado College is making their first trip to the Final Four (and now
championship game) since 1957 when they last won a national title beating
Michigan ironically. However, Michigan and Colorado College had quite the
history in the 50's meeting three times overall for the championship, with
Michigan winning two of those three title games (1952, and 1955).

While it's been a long time coming for CC, Michigan has put together great
teams that have failed to materialize into national champions. Michigan as
a program has won 7 national titles from 1948-1964, but have only been to
one championship game since (1977 vs. Wisconsin). In fact up until this
year Michigan had been to three of four Phinal Phour's without advancing to
the title game. However Michigan got over the hump against BU in what
appears to be convincing fashion as observers have pointed out here.

Overall, Michigan is 7-2 in the championship, and both loses have come to
teams now in the WCHA (Colorado College and Wisconsin).
