JohnH inspired me.  Here are my two cents on the right/left issue.
 
I'm a natural lefty with a right shot; also the only comfortable way for me
to hold a stick.  So imagine my troubles when I was began playing goal and
was forced into righty equipment!  (Makes for a wicked glove hand.)
 
Anyway, I used to run hockey clinics at my rink and never really noticed the
predominance of right shots until Jim Watson (Phila Flyers Alum) pointed it
out to me.  He thought it was due to the popularity of baseball in America.
Bat right--shoot right.
