Crowder Will Wait To Hear From Denver

LOWELL - Bruce Crowder will learn early next week if he will be offered
the job as hockey coach at the University of Denver.

Crowder returned to his duties at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell
Wednesday after a 2-1/2 day whirlwind tour of the Denver campus and the
area following a formal interview for the job left vacant when Frank
Serratore was fired at the end of last season.

Denver is expected to make its decision on its next coach by the middle of
next week. Crowder is believed to be one of two or three finalists for
the position.

Crowder, who was accompanied by his wife, Lucy, on the trip, said he
learned both positive and negative things. They also checked out real
estate in the Denver area.

"There are some good things about the school and the area, and some
not-so-good things," Crowder said. "But if nothing else comes out of
this, I picked up some things out there I think can help our program
here."

One of the things which impressed Crowder was the new rink Denver plans to
open in time for the 1995-96 season.

Crowder spent his first day back at UMass-Lowell talking with potential
walk-on candidates for next winter's team.

[Chaz is the "beat" writer for the team during the season. He is also a
VERY well respected baseball writer, covering the Red Sox during the
summer (he's also official scorer at many Fenway games), and is also
president of the New England Baseball Writers Association]

[Anyone have any ideas/comments on how hard recruiting becomes when a
team's coaching situation is in "limbo"? I can't help but think that this
next season is a rebuilding year for Lowell anyways - doesn't the
possibibility of a coaching change present even more of an uphill climb?
