I wrote about WCHA goal judges in a post earlier this month, and I have
to comment once again about the situation at LakeviewArena. One certain
goal judge who is positioned behind the visiting teams goal has been a
major problem this year and the last couple of seasons. The latest
mistake was when UAA played NMU a few weeks ago at Lakeview. In
Saturdays game of the 3rd period there was a scramble in the slot area
in front of UAA's goalie Lee Schill. The puck clearly crossed the goal
line from my view point which was right behind the goal judge a few rows
up. The referee was not in position to see the shot. I could write a lot
of other instances where pucks crossed the line, hit the bottom of the
cross bar where the netting is attached, bounced under the padding when
the ice was extremely wet, etc etc etc. Then I did some investigating
and found out these goal judges are not certified by the WCHA, they
don't get paid and there only reward is slipping in the door for free. I
think that an important NCAA Division I hockey game should be goal
judged by professionals, not junior hockey type people who could care
less about there job.
