HOCKEY FALLS TO TRINITY, 7-3 IN NCAA DIVISION III FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF GAME

NEW BEDFORD, MA-Visiting Trinity (CT) exploded for give goals in the second period and held off a late rally to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 7-3, in an NCAA Division III first round playoff game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday night.

Leading 1-0, Trinity scored five times in the second period to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Junior forward Daniel Maturi (North Kingstown, RI/Tabor Academy) fired home the rebound of a shot by senior forward Matt Crum (Odessa, FL/Salisbury) at 2:10, then junior forward Chris Oetting (Katonah, NY/Westminster) did likewise with freshman forward Adam Houli’s (Howell, NJ/Gunnery School) shot to make it 3-0 at 8:36. Crum scored a power play goal unassisted at 11:13, Houli fired home a wrist shot from the slot with the Bantams enjoying a man advantage at 13:41, and junior defenseman Chris Diozzi (Belmont, MA/Deerfield Academy) made it 6-0 when he scored at 16:45.

The Corsairs rallied in the third period. After senior forward Ross Grubin (Newington, CT/South Kent HS) scored at 8:55 of the third period to give the Bantams a 7-0, senior Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) put the Corsairs on the board when he scored twice. He fired a slap shot from the left circle past Trinity freshman goalie Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill HS) at 10:52 to make it 7-1, then converted a nifty feed from sophomore defenseman Paul Moran (Rockville Centre, NY/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) with the Corsairs a man short at 12:03. Junior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) made it 7-3 when he scored at 13:30. Junior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) and sophomore defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) assisted. UMass Dartmouth removed freshman goalie Colin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS), who replaced junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at the start of the third period, with 2:15 remaining, but the Bantams held them off the rest of the way.

Trinity drew first blood when junior forward Ryan Masucci (Winthrop, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) flipped home the rebound of Houli’s shot at 6:13 of the first period. Diozzi also drew an assist.

“The first period was very even, and then they got two five on five goals and two power plays, and the game started to get away from us,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I think we ran into a very talented team in Trinity that was very hot, and I think they found their skating legs in the second period, and they adjusted to the smaller rink.”

The Corsairs were shut out on all four of their power play chances. TC scored on two of four opportunities, while yielding a shorthanded goal to UMass Dartmouth. Green and Tracy combined to make 22 saves for the Corsairs, while Vesprini made 19 stops for the Bantams.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 18-9-1 with the loss, while Trinity improved to 16-10-2 with the victory. The Bantams advanced and will visit Elmira in a quarterfinal game Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Corsairs saw their season come to an end.
