It amazed me when I started to cover some professional hockey games that shot
charts were not part of the standard record-keeping.

This is such an unbelievable analysis tool for broadcasters and other media, it
seems like a no-brainer.

(BTW, shot charts track all shots attempted and where on the ice they were
taken from, who took them, and whether they were blocked, wide, on net or
scored.)

I assume that pro teams actually go through the tapes and compile data of this
sort afterward. Supposedly the NHL is going to start keeping this stuff
officially in the near future and quantifying it for stat and analysis
purposes.

I wish I had the time to go through the shots charts from each game and do some
number crunching. But it's a lot a work. There's a TON of great things that
could be learned from doing it though -- Is there a stat freak out there who
would do this?

The thing is - no one except media members sees the shot charts, and I bet most
don't really pay attention to them.
