Michigan Tech Hockey Games Notes vs. Denver
Friday, October 28, 1994 MacInnes Student Ice Arena 7:35 p.m.
Jamie who? Sophomore goaltender Luciano Caravaggio (Etobicoke, Ont.), who
made 49 saves in MTU's 2-2 overtime tie at Lake Superior State last
Saturday (Oct. 22), will get the call in net tonight. Caravaggio has
already doubled his win total of one from last year. Tonight marks his
first career game against Denver.
WCHA's Top-Scoring Line Back In Action -- Senior right wing Randy Stevens
(Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) returns to the lineup after missing the first
three games of the season. Stevens injured his shoulder on Sept. 3 during
testing and has been out since. He joins senior left wing Brent Peterson
(Thunder Bay, Ont.) and junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) on
perhaps the premier line in the WCHA, if not college hockey.
Senior left wing Brent Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) is this year's team
captain. Peterson has 61 career goals entering tonight's game and needs
just 14 more lamplighters to move into MTU's all-time top 10 list.
Sophomore left wing Jason Prokopetz (Esterhazy, Sask.) is looking for his
first career point tonight. Prokopetz is the only forward in the lineup
(with the exception of Randy Stevens, who has been injured) that has yet to
garner a point this season.
Senior center Travis Seale (Mississauga, Ont.), who staked MTU to a 1-0
lead in each of its first two games, is nearing the century mark in games
played. Seale will play in his 98th career contest tonight.
Seven new members will be inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of
Fame tomorrow. The inductees include former hockey players Rick Best, John
Kosiancic (Ko-z-AN-sick), and George Hill, along with football player
Robert Hunt and men's basketball player Bill Massey. In addition, two new
builders (supporters) will be inducted including Bob Olson and Bob
Hauswirth. Olson is in his 24th year as the voice of the Michigan Tech
Hockey Huskies.
Sophomore defenseman Eric Jensen (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is off to a fast
start. In his first three games, Jensen has four points (all assists). He
did not get to four points last year until his 21st game.
Junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) is the only MTU player who
enters tonight's game with any point streak of note. Mikesch has a
four-game point streak in progress, dating back to the last game of the
'93-94 season.
Michigan Tech enters play tonight with a 2-0-1 record overall. The
Huskies have yet to play a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game.
With a victory tonight, MTU would move to 3-0-1 and be undefeated in its
first four outings. Not since 1974-75 (20 years ago) have the Huskies been
undefeated in their first four contests.
MTU went undefeated in its two-game non-conference road trip against CCHA
teams last weekend. MTU last went undefeated on a two-game road trip on
Jan. 8-9, 1993, when the Huskies won twice at Colorado College.
Michigan Tech has scored in every period of every game with the
exception of the first period and the overtime period at Lake Superior
State last Saturday (Oct. 29).
The Huskies are wearing their white jerseys here tonight. The jerseys
depict the new Husky Dog logo that was officially released on Dec. 29 last
year at the Great Lakes Invitational.
MTU's women's volleyball team is currently ranked third in the country in
NCAA Division II. The Huskies are 24-2 overall and 10-2 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
THE SERIES
Michigan Tech and Denver will meet for the 152nd time tonight. In the
all-time series, MTU has a 72-68-11 advantage.
In the last 10 games of the series, Michigan Tech has a 6-2-2 record.
In the last 10 games played here at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, the
Huskies are 7-3-0.
SWEEPS -- The last Michigan Tech sweep in the series came on Feb.. 11-12,
1994, in Houghton, by 7-1 and 6-2 counts. The last Denver sweep was Feb.
9-10, 1990, by 15-7 and 6-3 scores here in Denver, Colo. The Wednesday
before that series, former MTU coach Herb Boxer announced his resignation.
SHUTOUTS -- There have been 12 shutouts in the series, six by Michigan
Tech. There have been six shutouts in Houghton, with MTU holding a 4-2-0
advantage in those game. There have also been six shutouts in Denver, with
the Pioneers holding a 5-1-0 advantage in those affairs. The last shutout
in the series came 36 games ago in a 4-0 DU home victory on Nov. 15, 1985.
MTU's last shutout was on Feb. 16, 1979, in a 5-0 effort at the Dee
Stadium.
OVERTIME -- There have been 19 overtime games in the series. Michigan
Tech has an 8-1-10 record in those extra session games. The last OT game in
the series was Dec. 11, 1993, in Denver, with the teams skating to a 4-4
tie.
THE SITE -- Michigan Tech is 50-21-4 (.693) at home against Denver, while
the Pioneers hold a 46-22-7 (.678) advantage in Denver, Colo. The two teams
have met once at a neutral site, that a 5-3 DU win in Boston, Mass., in the
NCAA Playoffs.
Michigan Tech coach Bob Mancini is 5-1-2 against Denver.
MONTH OF OCTOBER -- MTU and Denver have met just four times in the month
of October. The Huskies are 2-2-0 vs. the Pioneers in the month and 1-1-0
here in Houghton.

For the second straight year, Michigan Tech has two sets of brothers on
its team -- Jeff and Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) and Brent and Kyle
Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.).
Jim Storm and Randy McKay are both in attendance here tonight. Storm, now
with the Hartford Whalers, played for the Huskies from 1990-93, while
McKay, a member of the New Jersey Devils, played at MTU from 1984-88.
The MTU football team will be in action at home tomorrow against
seventh-ranked Ferris State. Opening kickoff for the Midwest
Intercollegiate Football Conference affair is slated for 12 noon.
MTU will dress a total of nine first-year players tonight, including six
forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender. All but forward Jason
Prokopetz (Esterhazy, Sask.) and defenseman Travis VanTighem (Calgary,
Alta.) have gained a point already this season.
Tim Nott has replaced Joe Gorby as MTU's assistant SID. Nott, who did his
undergraduate work at Central Michigan, spent last season at the U. of
Florida.
MTU has a total of 14 players on its roster that have played in the
United States Hockey League.
Sophomore netminder Luciano Caravaggio (Etobicoke, Ont.) has done it
again. For the second straight year, Caravaggio has the most syllables of
any player in the WCHA in his name. With nine syllables, Caravaggio is two
better than Denver goaltender Sinuhe Wallinheimo.
