  Well, New Hampshire may/may not (choose one :-) be in a similar situation
this year as Cornell was back in 1986-87. The Cats will dress 4 net-minders
in practice for the upcoming campaign, although only three are eligible for
game action. Following the late Spring signing of All-American junior-to-be
Jeff Levy to a professional contract, senior Brett Abel now becomes the pre-
season favorite to assume the bulk of net-minding chores for the Wildcats
this season. Brett has played sparingly, but effectively, during his three
years in Durham, compiling a 5-0-1 mark as backup to first Pat Szturm, then
Jeff Levy the past two seasons. He's joined by sophomore Jim Mcinerny,
former All-Star in the Middlesex (MA) prep school League; freshman Trent
Cavicchi (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), MVP of last year's annual Aero Cup
Tournament matching teams from the various Canadaian Junior "B" Leagues;
*and* former Providence College goal-keeper Mike Heinke, who of course must
sit out a season as mandated by NC$$ regulations. Whomever does win the
starting nod will likely see a lot of rubber - each of UNH's top five scorers
was lost to graduation from an offense that could cover a lot of mistakes
by the young defensive corp. The defense has had a season to mature, but
they'll not have the luxury of a 40-shot per game offense this time 'round;
freshmen phenoms Sean Perry and Mike Sullivan will likely have to make an
impact right away in order for UNH to avoid sinking toward the bottom of
the Hockey East standings. Let the games begin !!

  But speaking of standings (and dalmations :-) here's the results of the
annual Hockey East pre-season Coaches Poll:

	1. Maine
	2. Boston University
	3. Providence
	4. Boston College
	5. New Hampshire
	6. Northeastern
	7. UMass-Lowell
	8. Merrimack (sorry Mike :-)
