THOMAS’ THREE GOALS LEAD GOPHERS TO SEASON-OPENING WIN
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Ambria Thomas scored a goal in each period and linemate
La Toya Clarke assisted on all three as Minnesota opened the 2000-01 season
with a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State.
Despite being outshot 10-9 in the opening period, the Gophers got on the
board first when Thomas knocked in a rebound from Laura Slominski seven
minutes, 22 seconds into the game.
Thomas gave her team a 2-0 lead just 1:20 into the second period but the
Huskies’ Ricki-Lee Doyle scored a power-play goal just 40 seconds later to
cut the lead in half.
The scored remained that way until late in the game when Thomas completed
her hat trick with 2:56 to play. Tracy Engstrom scored at 18:53 of the
period to close out the scoring.
After being outshot in the opening 20 minutes, Minnesota had a 30-14
advantage in shots on goal over the next two periods, outshooting its hosts
39-24. Erica Killewald made 23 saves to earn the victory.
The two teams close out their home-and-home series on Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
at Mariucci Arena.
